Seed Company Links

We buy plant and shrubs locally, because our weather does not always cooperate with the US Postal system. Seeds keep until the weather is right.

The advantage of ordering seeds is that you have a better selection to choose from. We found the seed companies from the region you live in tend to grow the best.

These are the companies we usually order from:

Burpee We especially like their Heirloom selection.

Harris Seeds This company was a favorite of my Grandmother.

Thompson & Morgan has a fine selection.

Vermont Bean Seed Company Their black beans are my favorite.

I have never ordered from this company; but I like their insect page:

Caution: when ordering bugs; make sure that what ever you order has natural enemies in your area. We have done well with ladybugs in the past.

The Praying Mantis is the exception to this rule. The Praying Mantis is a warrior race and control their population through mortal combat.

I remember Allegheny State Park introducing a new type of beetle to control their tent caterpillar over population. The next year they had a black beetle over population. You could not walk in the park without stepping on a beetle. After much work they eventually introduced some other creature that ate the black beetles. Allegheny is state funded. You may not have the resources to correct a mistake like that.

If the bug you are considering to purchase normally lives in your area, your area will more than likely have natural predators. We purchased ladybugs because although they are native to our area, the lawn loving majority with their pesticides did not provide a good habitat for ladybugs. Since we planted bushes, trees, flowers, along with our vegetables, the fourth or fifth generation of ladybug happily live in our gardens.
